From the Battlefield back to Horticulture

As far back as I can remember, I've always been around horticulture growing up. From my uncle opening "Upstate Greenery" in Pelzer which is still thriving to this day. To me and my Grandfather opening "The Artistic Garden" in Fountain Inn but eventually had to close. I've always felt a burning desire to make a positive impact on the world. This passion led me down the path to enlist in the Army as an Infantryman. After numerous combat deployments and countless injuries and wear and tear on my body I retired. After going to college for a while I felt something was missing and just wasn't me. I stumbled into the world of microgreens which truly resonated with my spirit. Starting a microgreens business was more than just a venture for me; it was a calling.

I opened Simply Southern Microgreens not just to offer a product, but to share a vision. In these delicate greens, I saw an opportunity to bridge the gap between nutrition and sustainability, to provide communities with food that's as good for the Earth as it is for the body. But beyond that, microgreens represent a larger message for me: that even in the smallest of things, there's immense potential and power.

To me, this business isn't just about growing plants; it's about growing hope, fostering community, and nurturing a brighter, greener future. Every tray of microgreens I cultivate is a testament to my commitment to making a difference, one leaf at a time.

What exactly are microgreens?

Microgreens are young, tender shoots of vegetables and herbs harvested just after the first true leaves emerge, typically when they're about 1 to 3 inches tall. Despite their small size, these tiny greens are packed with intense flavors, vibrant colors, and a remarkable concentration of nutrients. They are more mature than sprouts but younger than baby greens, offering a unique combination of taste and nutrition that enhances any dish.

Grown from the seeds of vegetables and herbs like broccoli, radish, sunflower, and arugula, microgreens are cultivated in soil under controlled conditions. They are usually ready to harvest within 7 to 14 days after germination. Because they are harvested at such an early stage, microgreens contain higher levels of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants compared to their fully grown counterparts. This makes them a powerful addition to your meals, not only elevating the visual appeal and flavor but also boosting the nutritional value. Whether sprinkled on salads, blended into smoothies, or used as a garnish, microgreens bring a fresh and healthful dimension to your culinary creations.
